Before the modern world, a craftsman's work was measured by how well it held up in the field, in battle, and across generations. The tools and weapons of Viking-age Scandinavia and medieval Europe were not decorative objects. They were built for function, and the best of them became beautiful precisely because they were built to last.
At JW SteelCrafts, we hand forge historical and Viking-inspired pieces from the same materials and with the same techniques we use for our knives and axes. High-carbon and Damascus steel, traditional forge methods, real wood and leather fittings. These are not plastic-handled display pieces, they are handmade objects built with the same standard as a working knife.
What We Make
Viking Seax Knife
The seax was one of the most common bladed tools carried by Viking-age Norsemen, a single-edged utility knife used for everything from food preparation to close-quarters combat. Our Viking Seax Knife is hand forged from high-carbon steel, shaped to historical proportions. It is a functional knife as much as it is a historical piece designed for buyers who want an authentic connection to the period, not a costume prop.
Thor's Hammer Mjolnir
Mjolnir is the most recognized symbol in Norse mythology, the hammer of Thor, symbol of strength, protection, and the power of thunder. Our Thor's Hammer Mjolnir is hand forged from solid steel at our Texas forge. Each hammer carries the weight and surface character of forged steel not cast, not plated, not mass produced.
Who These Pieces Are For
Our historical and Viking-inspired collection draws buyers from several distinct communities:
-
Collectors: people who appreciate handmade metalwork and historical craftsmanship as objects of intrinsic value. A hand forged seax or Mjolnir belongs in a serious collection alongside other quality pieces.
-
Historical re-enactors: buyers who need historically accurate, handmade pieces that hold up to use. Our high-carbon steel construction means these pieces perform as well as they look.
-
Norse mythology and Viking culture enthusiasts: buyers who want pieces that connect them to the history, mythology, and craft tradition of the Viking age. A hand forged Mjolnir or seax from a real blacksmith shop carries different weight than a factory import.
-
Gift buyers: a handmade Viking seax or Thor's Hammer Mjolnir is a standout gift for the history enthusiast, the outdoorsman with a Viking aesthetic, or the collector who has most things but not this.
The Craft Behind Each Piece
Every piece in this collection is made the same way we make our knives and axes: at the forge, by hand, from steel bar stock. We do not use casting (which produces a weaker, lower-density object), CNC machining, or imported components. The steel is worked under heat until it reaches the correct profile, then heat-treated, fitted, and finished by hand.
High-carbon steel options give a clean, dark finish that develops natural patina over time. Damascus steel variants where available carry the layered grain pattern produced by folding and welding at the forge. Each Damascus piece is unique: the pattern you receive will not exactly match any photograph.
Custom Orders
We accept custom orders for most pieces in this collection. If you have a specific historical reference, a preferred steel type, a handle material choice, or dimensions from a period original you want to replicate contact us. Custom historical commissions are among our most interesting work. Lead time is typically 3–6 weeks depending on complexity.
