Damascus steel is made by forge-welding layers of high-carbon and mild steel together, then repeatedly folding and drawing out the billet. This process — done by hand, under a hammer, with heat controlled by an experienced smith — creates the characteristic flowing pattern across the blade surface. It also produces a steel with superior edge retention and flexibility compared to single-composition steel.
