The seax (also spelled sax, scramasax, or saex) was the standard utility blade carried by Norsemen and Northern Europeans across the Viking age and the Migration period before it. It was not a display piece, it was an everyday tool: used to prepare food, repair gear, and serve as a sidearm when needed. The best seaxes were made by skilled blacksmiths, from quality steel, and built to last through real use.
At JW SteelCrafts, our Viking Seax Knife is hand forged at our Texas shop from high-carbon steel shaped to historically referenced proportions, heat-treated for performance. Each seax comes with a leather sheath. These are working knives built with the seriousness the design deserves.

What Is a Viking Seax Knife?
The seax was one of the most ubiquitous bladed tools in Viking-age Scandinavia and throughout Northern Europe from roughly 400 to 1100 AD. Seaxes ranged widely in size from small utility knives with 3–5 inch blades to large fighting seaxes with blades exceeding 18 inches. The defining characteristics of the seax are its single-edged construction, typically a straight or slightly curved blade, and a clipped or angled point.
Unlike a double-edged sword, the seax was not primarily a weapon, it was a tool that could serve as a weapon if needed. Most Norse and Anglo-Saxon men and women carried a seax as part of their everyday kit. It is sometimes called a 'scramasax' in historical sources (from the Old English term) or a 'sax' in simplified references. All of these terms describe the same blade form.
Are JW SteelCrafts Seax Knives Functional or Display-Only?
Our Viking Seax Knives are Fully functional: hand forged from high-carbon steel and heat-treated for real-world use. The blade holds an edge and is ground for a functional cutting profile. These are working knives, not decorative props.
Steel and Construction
Our seax blades are hand forged from high-carbon steel and heat-treated after forging. The forging process aligns the grain of the steel through the full blade, producing a tougher, more impact-resistant blade than one machined from bar stock. Heat treatment hardens the edge for cutting performance while leaving the spine slightly softer to absorb lateral stress without snapping.
The blade profile follows historical reference single-edged, with a geometry appropriate for the seax's dual role as utility knife and potential sidearm.
Handle Options
Our Viking Seax Knives are available with handles in wood. Each handle is fitted by hand to the full-tang blade. The handle is shaped for a natural grip that suits the seax's intended use neither too thick nor too slender.
Custom handle options are available. If you prefer a specific wood species, a natural material like antler or bone, or a synthetic option for durability, contact us before ordering.
Custom Engravings and Rune Markings
Custom rune engravings are available on the handle or blade. If you want a specific rune inscription, a name, a phrase, or a traditional runic pattern contact us with your requirements before placing your order.
Rune engravings are popular among historical re-enactors, Norse mythology enthusiasts, and buyers who want a seax that carries personal or symbolic meaning. Each engraved seax is a one-of-a-kind piece.
We also have Hammers inspired by Thor.
Historical Accuracy
Our seax design is a historically-informed modern interpretation. We do not claim every detail is an exact reproduction; the materials and construction methods reflect Viking-age practice, but some practical concessions are made for durability and usability in the modern context.
If you need a seax built to specific historical measurements from a documented find, contact us to discuss a custom commission. We have worked from museum dimensions and published archaeological records before.
